Why You Must Change Your Air Conditioner’s Air Filter Once a Month in Summer

Monday, April 20th, 2015

The air conditioner that keeps your household comfortably cool through the late spring and summer contains an air filter designed to keep debris from entering the AC’s cabinet through the return ducts. As part of regular maintenance to see that your air conditioner operates its best—and keeps operating its best for many years—you need to change this filter for a new once a month during the cooling season. (If your AC has a permanent filter, take it out once a month and clean it using a garden hose on low pressure.) If you don’t know where the filter is our how to change it, ask your air conditioning technician during annual professional maintenance session to show you.

Why this job is important

A clogged air filter is one of the leading causes of problems with an AC’s performance. Almost all of these problems are avoidable with monthly filter changing/cleaning. Here are some of the issues that a clogged filter can cause:

  • Reduced energy efficiency – If the airflow into the air conditioner’s cabinet is choked off at the filter, the system will drain more electricity in order to run. This will cause a rise—often a steep rise—in utility bills.
  • Ice along the coils – If insufficient warm air blows across the coils inside the air conditioner cabinet, the coils will remain too cool and water vapor will start to freeze along them. Frozen coils rapidly lose their ability to draw heat from the air, leading to an air conditioner that doesn’t provide cooling.
  • Motor damage – The filter’s ability to stop debris from entering the cabinet will drop if it is clogged, and dust and dirt will start to get inside and coat important mechanical components, such as the motors. The extra stress on the air handler motor can cause it to burn out and need replacement.

Keep in mind that replacing the filter is only one step in maintaining an air conditioner. The other steps need the assistance of professional HVAC technicians during a spring maintenance visit.

Should I Repair or Replace My Old Air Conditioner before Summer?

Monday, April 6th, 2015

“Repair or Replace?” This is one of the oldest questions in the history air conditioning service. We all know that no mechanical device, especially not one that does as much work as an AC, can last forever. At some point, it will need to be retired and a new unit installed in its place. But no one wants to make a replacement hastily, since this is a large job and more expensive than a few strategic repairs. If you have an air conditioning system that has seen quite a few summers already, and you feel concerned about whether it will make it through the upcoming hot months, then you’re probably debating whether to continue with repairs or schedule a replacement.

The good news about this debate is you don’t have to come up with an answer on your own. MVP Electric, Heating & Cooling can help you make the choice. We serve Overland Park, KS with trustworthy air conditioning service, and our technicians can give you a straightforward answer about the right path for you.

Times when repairs are best

If an air conditioning technician gives your AC an inspection (which you should always have arranged during the spring anyway) and informs you that he or she can keep the system going for a few more years with repairs, then you should probably go with repairs—particularly if the system is still a few years under its manufacturer’s estimated lifespan. If you hire a skilled technician with a reputation for customer satisfaction, you should be able to trust that the repairs will keep the AC working efficiently and effectively for another few summers.

When a replacement is best

When your air conditioner is at or beyond the manufacturer’s estimated lifespan, it’s time to consider replacing it. A good rule of thumb to use: any repair that would cost half the price of a new installation is not worth it. Even if the air conditioner can continue to work with repairs, a significant drop in energy efficiency will make it too costly to keep around. Your maintenance technician will be able to give you a breakdown of the costs of repairing an old system like this vs. putting in a new one.

Call MVP Electric, Heating & Cooling is here to help you make this decision for your future home comfort. Your satisfaction is our main priority, which is why we offer a 100% money-back guarantee on our work.

3 Benefits of Professional Air Duct Cleaning

Friday, April 3rd, 2015

It’s impossible to prevent some amount of dust, dander, lint, and other debris from entering your home’s ventilation system. Over time, this accumulation of contaminants will reach a point where it will have a negative effect on your HVAC system and even the quality of the air you and your family breathe. The solution to this problem is to arrange for professionals to come to your house every few years and perform a thorough cleaning of the air ducts with advanced, high-end equipment.

If you want to schedule an appointment for a professional air duct cleaning service in Overland Park, KS, all you have to do is pick up the phone and dial MVP Electric, Heating & Cooling. We will see that you receive the best professional cleaning job possible.

Here are 3 benefits you will receive from professional air duct cleaning:

  • An efficient air conditioner and heater: Your air conditioner and forced-air heater (such as a furnace) will face increasing air resistance from the ductwork if it is clogged with dust and other debris. Even a thin layer of dust can create a difference in how much it costs to operate your AC or heater during the year. When you clear out the ductwork, you’ll make the job of your air conditioner and heater much easier, and they will reward you with lowered energy bills.
  • A cleaner home: Here’s something to consider: the average six-room home circulates 40 lbs. of dust through its ventilation system each year. Imagine all that dust blowing through your house and covering your carpets and furnishings. When you have air duct cleaning done, you’ll remove a massive reservoir of dust and make your home much easier to keep clean.
  • Healthier air: A number of harmful pollutants can collect inside ductwork and end up circulating through the air the people in your household breathe. This can create health issues, especially for people who suffer from asthma and allergies. When you arrange for routine duct cleaning, you’ll help protect your household from airborne contaminants.

If you are unsure if you need duct cleaning or not, give MVP Electric, Heating & Cooling a call. We will only recommend this service if we think it will benefit you at the time. We use the finest quality equipment for air duct cleaning in Overland Park, KS, and you can count on us to see that the job is done right.
