Plumbing FAQs

  • If you think you have a plumbing-related leak in your home, there’s an easy way you can check. Go out to your water meter and record the level. Make sure no one uses any water for a few hours, then go back and check the meter again. If the level has changed on your meter, you probably have a leak – call the local team at MVP to have it promptly taken care of!

  • The most common thing our plumbing technicians find is corroded O-rings, gaskets, or valve seats that cause faucets to leak. Together, these components are what properly hold back the water until the faucet is opened, so if one of them is corroded, you’ll get a leaky, dripping faucet!

To stop a kitchen or bathroom faucet leak, shut off the water to the sink and open the faucet to let the water properly drain out. Next, use an Allen key or a screwdriver to remove the faucet handle. If it has a nut holding the internal parts in place, check to see if that is loose, it is possible that tightening it with pliers may be enough to stop the leak! If not, you should remove the nut and disassemble the faucet (just make sure you can properly put it back together again).

If your home faucet contains a cartridge, we recommend you don’t take it apart, and just replace it with a new one.

  • An overflowing toilet is usually caused by a leak in your tank’s fill valve or possibly the deterioration of the shaft or wire that sets the fill level. Whatever the cause, call the local team at MVP for the right fix and solution today!

  • Most foul-smelling water is caused by a combination of hydrogen, sulfur, and bacteria present within the water. Sulfur and bacteria are naturally present in the water your appliances use, and they will not make you sick. When the magnesium anode rod in your water heater tank reacts with the sulfur and bacteria in the water, it can create enough hydrogen to create an unpleasant odor (often similar to rotten eggs). There are many ways to properly fix or remedy this, from replacing the magnesium anode rod to purifying the water in your water heater.

  • If your home’s water heater starts making a lot of noise, it is very possible you have got some serious issues. This could cause a short that blows your circuit breakers, or it could also start to build up sediment, which clogs up your water heater and burns excess electricity to heat. You might be able to beat repairs temporarily by draining the system completely and then refilling it, but we recommend contacting a licensed and experienced plumber to do an inspection.

  • Plumbing code outlines the best and most modern methods to be used in plumbing installations.

Since the plumbing in any private or public building is a part of the community water and sewage disposal system, it is vital that such installations should not be left to the discretion of potentially irresponsible individuals. The protection of the public health and safety must be maintained by the establishment of sound code provisions.

A plumbing or sanitation code is not a “plumber’s code”, as a code of honor. It is rather a set of Rules and Regulations imposed by cities, counties, and states on anyone who undertakes any work involving the installation of drinking water, sewer, or toilet facilities in homes, offices, schools, and hospitals. Regardless of who may be performing the work, plumbing and sanitation codes require that it be done in a specific, safe manner because it was found that a failure to do so can cause widespread disease, which can be crippling and deadly-to the community.
